Matt Reeves teases 'very emotional' Batman story, pays tribute to Christopher Nolan


Sad Affleck may just be about to get even sadder.

Matt Reeves says he intends to tell a moving story in ‘The Batman’ drawing comparisons between the Dark Knight and Caesar, the lead character in the ‘Planet of the Apes’ reboot trilogy.

“It’s my hope to tell a very emotional Batman story,” Reeves told Yahoo Movies while promoting ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’, “and I do see a very strong parallel between [Batman and Caesar] because they’re both damaged characters who are grappling to the do the right thing in a very imperfect world. A world that’s filled with all of the corruption that is human.”

After ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ is unleashed in cinemas on 11 July, director Matt Reeves will get to work on ‘The Batman’ with production scheduled to take place in 2018.

The ‘Cloverfield’ director was handed the reins to Ben Affleck’s first solo Batman film after Affleck decided against directing it himself earlier this year. Reeves recently teased ‘The Batman’ will be a Hitchcockian, “noir-driven, detective version of Batman”, although it’s not yet clear who will be the film’s main villain.

Joe Manganiello was originally in the frame to play Deathstroke, but production was pushed back for the script to be rewritten “from the ground up”, so everything remains in flux.

Beyond Hitchcock, Reeves admits he’s also been inspired by Christopher Nolan’s approach to genre filmmaking.

“What I love that [Nolan] did was that he took the genre seriously,” Reeves told us.

“What studios are willing to make at the moment is a very, very narrow band of films. What I discovered is that this genre has the potential to be about something more. You can use the metaphors of the genre to talk about [a lot].

“I think that the metaphors of both of the franchises [Batman and Apes] enable you to tell stories that have deep emotional resonance. That’s actually what excites me about it. It’s interesting because I was obsessed with both as a child, and yet there is something potentially very adult about what you can explore under the cover of that fantasy. That is what draws me to it, and that’s what I’m excited about.”

All the films in Nolan’s Batman trilogy – ‘Batman Begins’, ‘The Dark Knight’, and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ – transcended the superhero genre touching on themes of grief, terrorism, chaos, and redemption, something that Reeves’ two ‘Apes’ movies also manage in the sci-fi realm.

“I think the other thing that I really admire in what [Nolan] did was knowing what it is to make a big studio film,” Reeves concludes, “which often can fall into that sense of committee filmmaking where there’s an anonymity to the point of view of the film.

Wonder Woman 2 Set in 1980s, Chris Pine Returning?

As Wonder Woman‘s box office success continues to build, it sounds like it may carry her straight into the 1980s for Wonder Woman 2 – with her leading man returning, despite Steve Trevor’s fate. DC Films has been careful not to shift attention away from the DCEU’s runaway success and towards a sequel too soon, with director Patty Jenkins not yet officially returning, even as a a story treatment for the inevitable Wonder Woman 2 begins to take shape. A shape we may now know, at least in terms of setting.

The current timeline of the DCEU made fans question whether the Wonder Woman sequel would be tied to the fallout from Justice League (as is the case with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman solo film), or tell another period story set between Diana’s origin and her Batman V Superman debut. Thanks to some new information, it seems that question can be answered, along with the villains Wonder Woman 2 will introduce decades before Steppenwolf ever challenged the Justice League.

According to production details Screen Rant has learned, the story of Wonder Woman 2 will be another historical adventure prior to the modern day DCEU. Set during the 1980s, the film will send Diana against the forces of Soviet Union in the closing days of the Cold War. The production team is expected to remain on board for the sequel, with confirmation that Geoff Johns is developing Wonder Woman 2‘s script with Jenkins (who is still in negotiations, with all evidence and word of mouth pointing to her return once the contracts are signed).

As fans use their imagination to picture the sequel – swapping out the battlefields of World War I for the espionage and maneuverings of Moscow – the last detail may be the biggest relief. The report also confirms that Chris Pine will be returning, once again acting as Diana’s ally Steve Trevor. Exactly how that’s possible given the conclusion of his story in Wonder Woman… may be the real question moving forward.

From a marketing standpoint, the decisions all make complete sense. Across the critical and commercial acclaim heaped on Jenkins’s film, the chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine was one of the most praised aspects – tinged with the fact that one glimpse may be all audiences ever get. On one hand, the winning combination of Steve Trevor and Diana makes his sacrifice in the movie’s final act all the more meaningful for Diana’s character in BvS and beyond. On the other… it’s the kind of formula movie studios tend to pursue at all costs, even ones in less critical hot water than DC Films.

The same line of thinking may be to thank for the decision to tell another story set prior to Diana’s introduction into BvS and the Justice League. The cynics will claim it’s an effort to keep Diana as far away from Zack Snyder’s version as possible (despite his role in shaping Wonder Woman with Jenkins), and allow Jenkins and Johns the freedom to tell whatever story she wishes. Taking a step back, though, it seems the smartest move all around. Jenkins has already explained how the Batman V Superman claim that Wonder Woman “walked away from mankind” can mean more than fans inferred, opening doors to any number of compelling stories set in the 20th Century.

With Justice League telling the next chapter of Diana’s story alongside DC’s younger heroes, why not have the cake and eat it, too – filling in the exciting years when Diana was Earth’s only living superhero? And considering the comparisons to Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger the first time around, shifting the next film to World War II would only exacerbate the potential problems. Diana can still comment on the war and its role in shaping the Cold War that followed, after all.

Fans won’t need to be convinced that seeing Diana during the 1980s would be worth the price of admission alone, but the promise of another pairing with Pine (whether a resurrected version, or a descendant of Steve Trevor) should seal the deal. Since Jenkins has stated her feelings that Wonder Woman 2 should be set in America, the heroes may be forced to swap No Man’s Land for a Cold War spy thriller – and who would complain?

Em entrevista ao Uproxx, Matt Reeves disse que conversou com a Warner para ter a sua visão em The Batman, novo filme solo do personagem:

“Quando cheguei, o que eu disse foi ‘olha, antes de tudo, vocês querem saber se estou interessado na franquia. Eu estou. Amo essa franquia. Eu amo o personagem desde quando era criança. Mas estou interessado de uma forma específica, e se vocês não estiverem interessados dessa forma, tudo bem’. E a boa notícia é que eles disseram ‘sim, estamos interessados dessa forma’. E me lembro disso acontecer também em Planeta dos Macacos: o Confronto. Se não, poderiam acontecer momentos em que eu chegaria para uma ideia que seria uma versão do filme e, em algum momento pelo caminho, porque eles não me conhecem ou não sabem o que é, eles diriam ‘por que não fazemos de tal forma?’, e eu simplesmente diria ‘mas esse não é o filme que conversamos, não é o filme que eu quero fazer’. E preciso dizer que eles sempre recuaram quando chegou a isso. E sempre fiz dessa forma”.

Snydeus já deu o passe açucarado e agora é só o Reeves saber finalizar.

Diretor de 'Batman' não usará roteiro escrito por Ben Affleck
Matt Reeves afirmou à MTV americana que trabalha em 'uma história nova'.


Matt Reeves, cineasta que substituiu Ben Affleck na direção de "The Batman", afirmou que não usará mais o roteiro escrito pelo ator, que interpreta o super-herói da DC.

Em participação em um podcast da MTV americana, Reeves ("Planeta dos macacos: A guerra") respondeu que abandonaria a história pensada por Affleck e Geoff Johns, presidente da DC.

"Não, é uma história nova. Acabou de começar novamente. Estou muito empolgado com ela. Acho que será muito legal", afirmou.

Recentemente, o diretor afirmou que Affleck continua no papel do homem-morcego, e que o filme terá um tom mais parecido ao gênero noir.

Affleck estreou sob o manto do cavaleiro das trevas em "Batman vs. Superman: A origem da justiça", de 2016, uma superprodução que arrecadou US$ 873 milhões, e repetirá a atuação em "Liga da Justiça", que estreia no Brasil em 16 de novembro.

O novo filme de Reeves, "Planeta dos macacos: A guerra", estreia no Brasil no dia 3 de agosto.

Box Office: 'Wonder Woman' Holding Better Than Any Superhero Movie in 15 Years

The female-directed tentpole is now assured of earning $390 million-plus domestically to boast the top gross of summer 2017 and one of the top 10 performances of all time for a comic book adaptation.

Word of mouth is a wondrous thing.

Look no further than Warner Bros. and DC's Wonder Woman. The summer blockbuster boasts the best hold of any superhero film in more than 15 years at the North American box office, where even the most successful summer tentpoles can catch a case of sunstroke and retreat to the shade rather quickly amid so much competition. Wonder Woman is the unusual exception.

Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman is still going strong as it heads into its seventh week. The movie, grossing $371.3 million through Tuesday, is now assured of topping out at $390 million or more domestically, becoming the No. 8 comic book adaptation of all time, not accounting for inflation. And it will soon pass Disney and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($385.8 million) in North America to become the top summer earner.

That also means Wonder Woman will earn roughly 3.8 times the $103.3 million it collected when it launched over the June 2-4 weekend — the best multiple for the genre in decades. Currently, the film's multiple is 3.6, slightly ahead of the first Spider-Man in 2002. The first Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) was also a word-of-mouth sensation, sporting a 3.5 multiple, while Nolan's sequel, The Dark Knight (2008), powered to a 3.4 multiple.

Generally speaking, a multiple in the vicinity of 2.5 to 3 is considered a win for a superhero film, particularly if the opening is especially mighty, i.e., north of $120 million.

"It feels like Wonder Woman will play all the way through August," says Warners' Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution. "Right now, the movie is still in about 3,000 locations. Usually, the theater count would be a fraction of that at this point."

The critically acclaimed film is also destined to become the studio's third-biggest movie domestically after The Dark Knight ($534.9 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1 million), again not accounting for inflation. It is about to pass the final Harry Potter film ($381 million) after eclipsing American Sniper ($350.1 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.4 million).

Globally, Wonder Woman has already become the top-grossing film of all time from a female helmer with solo directing duties. Still, Wonder Woman has been slower to catch on overseas, earning roughly $380 million to date for a global total of around $750 million. Many times, the foreign box office accounts for 70 percent of a tentpole's total gross; Wonder Woman's split is currently 49 percent domestic and 51 percent international.

Earlier this week, Ryan Reynolds and the team behind 20th Century Fox's superhero sensation Deadpool generously tweeted a congratulatory note after Wonder Woman surpassed Deadpool, which posted a domestic total of $363.1 million in early 2016. Reynolds is among many who are happy to sing Wonder Woman's praises.

"When critics and audiences are on the same page, you can pretty much bet the box office will be supercharged for the long haul," says box-office analyst Jeff Bock. "Wonder Woman is also a vehicle of female empowerment, something we don't regularly see in the superhero genre, and that has made it a very unique property this summer."

O longa alcançou no último domingo (16) a marca de US$ 380,7 milhões arrecadados no país, e vai ultrapassar hoje (17) Harry Potter e as Relíquias da Morte Parte 2, que tem a bilheteria de US$ 381 milhões. Os dois maiores filmes do estúdio no país são Batman: O Cavaleiro das Trevas (US$ 533,3 milhões) e Batman: O Cavaleiro das Trevas Ressurge (US$ 448,1 milhões).

O site ainda afirma que Warner e DC vão anunciar a data de estreia da sequência na San Diego Comic-Con, com a volta de Patty Jenkins na direção.

Shazam!, novo filme da DC que será protagonizada pelo Adão Negro, personagem de Dwayne The Rock Johnson, deverá começar a ser produzido a partir de fevereiro de 2018. A informação foi divulgada pelo Heroic Hollywood.

A previsão para a data de lançamento do filme era para 2019. Contudo, a Warner revelou duas novas datas de filmes do Universo Cinematográfico DC. O primeiro dos dois filmes está programado para chegar aos cinemas em 14 de fevereiro de 2020, com o outro projeto chegando alguns meses depois, no dia 5 de junho. A especulação é de que um desses filmes seja o longa Shazam!.

Chris McKay (LEGO Batman: O Filme), anunciado como diretor do filme solo do Asa Noturna, um dos longas anunciados da DC, não encontrará facilmente um ator para viver o protagonista. McKay usou sua conta oficial do Twitter para dizer que tipos de requisitos o ator que viverá o Dick Grayson dos quadrinhos precisa ter - confira:

“[O ator que o interpretará] tem que ser [tão apaixonado pelo personagem] quanto eu. Tem que ter comprometimento. Todos os dias. Do ponto de vista das cenas de ação, ginástica e artes marciais, vai ser cansativo. E deverá ser difícil emocionalmente também.”

Além de um trailer de Justice League e um teaser de Aquaman, espero que eles confirmem as datas dos próximos filmes na Comic Con.

De acordo com o The Wrap, a Warner agendou o lançamento de dois novos filmes da DC para 2020: um em 14 de fevereiro e outro em 5 de junho.

Além disso, o estúdio marcou a data de um projeto animado para 01 de junho de 2018 e um "filme-evento" para 13 de dezembro de 2019.

Por enquanto não há confirmação sobre quais serão os longas, mas projetos como The Batman e a sequência de Mulher-Maravilha estão entre as apostas. A expectativa é que as confirmações aconteçam esta semana, no painel da Warner na San Diego Comic-Con.

Shazam! confirma diretor e deve ser o próximo filme da DC Comics


Segundo o Hollywood Reporter, Shazam! é o próximo filme da DC Comics a ser rodado. Anteriormente saiu a informação de que as filmagens começam em fevereiro de 2018, e o site diz que a estreia pode acontecer já em 2019. Em seguida viria Esquadrão Suicida 2, que seria rodado na metade de 2018.

A produção é da New Line Cinema, o estúdio que criou O Senhor dos Anéis e hoje é uma subsidiária da WB. O sueco David Sandberg, dos terrores Quando as Luzes se Apagam e Annabelle 2, será o diretor, e Peter Safran, que trabalhou em Annabelle e é um dos produtores de Aquaman, supervisiona Shazam! como produtor.

Toda vez que profere a palavra "Shazam", o jovem Billy Batson sofre a mais notável das transformações: de um pirralho insignificante, torna-se um adulto, cujo nome é um acróstico formado pelas iniciais de Salomão, Hércules, Atlas, Zeus, Aquiles e Mercúrio. Nos quadrinhos, Shazam já demonstrou ser capaz de brigar de igual para igual com Superman, com seus poderes de relâmpagos.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson não estará em Shazam! mas segue ligado ao derivado que contará a história do vilão Adão Negro em seu próprio filme solo, que continua em desenvolvimento.

Muito estranho o The Rock estar de fora do filme.

Homem de Aço 2 | Roteirista de Kingsman fala sobre possibilidade de Matthew Vaughn dirigir o filme


Em entrevista ao Screen Rant (via HH), a roteirista Jane Goldman falou sobre a possibilidade de seu colega Matthew Vaughn dirigir Homem de Aço 2:

"Eu sei que ele é um grande fã do Superman. Eu gostaria de... eu não sei. Quero dizer, não tenho certeza. Acho que Matthew está olhando para isso do ponto de vista de um diretor. Não tenho ideia do que está acontecendo lá".

Questionada se trabalharia com Vaughn no longa, repetindo a parceria que teve com o diretor nos longas de Kingsman, Goldman diz não ter certeza:

"Não tenho certeza. Talvez eles já tenham um roteiro pronto... Eu não tenho certeza, mas é complicado com o personagem que tem esse tipo de história. Claro que X-Men tem uma história igualmente complicada, mas Superman parece muito mais recente. Ele voltou à vida em uma nova interação - ele significa muito para muitas pessoas e talvez existam pessoas mais conectadas com ele... mas quem sabe?".
